Part 2: So, I changed my mind.
I am going to jump to the most awful part of this little trip
and then I will tell you why I changed my mind and decided
this was not the vacation from he!!.
After we were in bed in Santa Fe, our friends came pounding
on our door. They had just learned that the two couples in the
SUVs, who had gone on to Mesa Verde, had been in an accident.
No one was critically injured. However, one friend had a fractured
vertebrae in her lower back and both cars were totalled!
(just a random highway scene)
They had found snow in Mesa Verde so decided not to
camp. The RVers set up in Mesa Verde anyway but the
other two went on toward another location. One car came around
a corner and hit an inch of hail on the road. She spun out and up an
embankment and back into the road and then up the embankment
again. On the other side of the road was a 40 foot drop into a ravine.
As car 1 is coming down the embankment and into the road, car 2 hits
car 1. This causes car 1 to move forward and stop (thus not going over
and into ravine) but causes car 2 to roll twice.
Both cars were totalled. The only severe injury was the
fractured vertebrae. She was the driver of car 1. Her husband
got a cut from his sunglasses and a bruised shoulder from the seat
belt. The friends who rolled were cut a little because all the glass in
the car was broken and they had a couple bruises.
They all made it home OK. We spent 2 days in Santa Fe and came home.
(windmills on our way home)
Last night I watched tv, about all the bad weather, people loosing
their homes, their lives, their loved ones. And I realized that our
vacation was not from he!!. When we couldn't camp, we could afford to
get a room somewhere nice. We ate good food and saw beautiful sights.
We enjoyed each others company, as we always do. And when our friends crashed, they lost cars which can be replaced. They were blessed and we
were blessed. It was not the vacation any of us wanted, it could have ended
in a horrible way. But we are all safe at home and planning our next adventure.
So I feel gratitude and happiness. I hope the same for each of those who read this.
Annette

With all that is going on in the world we should count our blessings. Glad everyone is save and sound...and what a tale to tell!
wow - very scary story!!! I am soooo glad you are all ok . . . blessings to you and all of your friends that it was mostly just the cars that were damaged!!
I did think the part about all the grit and wind and rain in the previous post was pretty funny though - I would have definitely been in the hotel at that point . . . I am truly a fair weather camper - sometimes I even bring my own flowers for the table - lol :)
Sounds like you may need a vacation from your vacation. :-)
I love your glass-half-full-approach. Gradtitude and happiness are where we look for it. Thanks Annette!
Glad to hear that everyone is safe!!! Hope to see you soon!
Hugs,
Julie
Amen. There's always someone who has it harder than us, and it reminds us to count our own blessings and be thankful for what we've been given. We are rich beyond comparison, we've got a lot to be thankful for.

Oh no! So glad your friends are OK--it's so scary, every single time we get into a car, right? I've become quite a homebody in my old age (though I do still love a road trip! Trying to figure out if we can do Round Top this year...)
Annette-
Sounds like you had a vacation that you will always remember! I'm sorry, but I had to laugh just alittle about your camping experience. Camping is great, unless it is raining sideways, with some red dirt mixed in it!
I'm so glad all your friends are ok too. And most important, is that MY freind has returned home in one piece!
XOXO,
Michelle
What a trip, Annette! So glad your friends are all going to be okay.
This is such a wonderful reminder to count our blessings. There is always more than one way to look at a situation....well, except maybe the muddy, rainy night in the tent. There may not be a bright side to that one.
Annette...glad your friends are o.k. My sister was in a serious car accident on Sunday night. She is bruised and shaken, but very lucky and grateful. Happy to hear you are planning your next adventure!

Oh Annette.... I agree... It was NOT the vacation from hell....and how wonderful that you could look at the blessings instead of the horrible situations on the trip... So happy you're home safe and sound and that you still had a good time.
Huggies!

Yikes! And I thought I have had a couple of bad vacations. Glad you're ok and able to see the good in it all.

You've definitely got a great attitude, because you're right that it could have been alot worse. You did get some really great shots though. My brother-in-law and his wife renewed their vows under one of those arches in Utah last year, and the video was spectacular. I can only imagine what it's like to actually be there. I hope your next adventure is a great one, minus the danger. And the camping!
What an experience, but it could have been worse.
As a child we were always camping. When I reached the age of 15, I promised myself never to camp again. And I held steadfast. Too many bad times, weather and such.
So I can feel for you with all my heart!
Hugs, Evi
